Thanks for visiting kollenkark.com!
I started kollenkark.com in 1997 as a hobby to teach myself how to build web sites
and code. Since then, it's been through many iterations including
a pretty ugly orange and purple version that lasted from 1999-2005.
When you work on software for almost ten years you get less motivated each passing
day to work on it for fun. I've had a ton of ideas on what I could do to update
the site over the years, but nothing exciting enough to get the 33% geek in me to
start churning out the code and content again.
One idea I've been floating for several years is to just dedicate the site to the
Kollenkark name and make a directory of Kollenkarks and little pushpins on where
they live in the world. I really like that idea, so over time you'll see an
evolution to this concept where Kollenkarks can register their info and location
which will show up on a world map. I've prototyped an HTML version of this
that works okay, but I'm also looking into using MapPoint. Until I get to
this vision, I'll be trying to make the site as useful as possible. Email
me if you have any ideas or features you want to see. I won't guarantee I'll
do them, but I will definitely consider them :)
The real thing that got me to start working on this is again is ASP.NET 2.0.
I quite coding on a daily basis 3 years ago when I became a Program Manager, so
I don't have the luxury of keeping up on the latest technologies anymore.
There are a ton of cool features in the 2.0 and learning about them really helps
me plan the software our team builds. It sucks when you are a developer and
the person in charge of your project doesn't know what's in the realm of technical
feasibility. I've found that in most cases you get better trade off decisions
and communication with developers when you understand the technology more.
Keep checking in for new things and send me feedback on anything you see.
Thanks,
Sean Kollenkark
